The story
Harry returns to Hogwarts expecting another year of lessons, Quidditch and life with his friends, but the school quickly becomes a place of suspicion. Students are attacked, threatening messages appear on the walls and an old legend about a hidden chamber begins to look less like a story.
The book expands the social history of the wizarding world. Ideas about ancestry, prejudice and the status of Muggle-born witches and wizards move to the centre of the plot, while Hogwarts itself becomes more than a backdrop: its founders, hidden spaces and inherited conflicts matter directly to the present.
For the wider series, Chamber of Secrets introduces several ideas that only reveal their full importance much later. It is also one of the books most closely tied to the school as a place, which makes it especially useful for understanding locations that reappear throughout the games.
