The story
Harry's third year begins under the shadow of an escaped prisoner. Sirius Black is believed to be dangerous, Hogwarts is guarded by Dementors and Harry is told that the threat is connected personally to the deaths of his parents.
The story widens the series beyond school rivalries and immediate mysteries. It introduces Azkaban, explores the previous generation at Hogwarts and shows how incomplete information can shape a person's understanding of the past. The Marauders, the Shrieking Shack and the history linking James Potter, Sirius Black, Remus Lupin and Peter Pettigrew become central pieces of the world's mythology.
This book is a turning point in tone: the magical world remains adventurous, but its institutions and adults become more complicated. Many fan-favourite locations and characters that later appear in adaptations and games gain their significance here.
